Patience & Precious Moments
Hello my lovelies,
It’s the first week of August. It’s been a very busy and productive summer, but I didn’t expect it to go by so quickly. I began the summer by joining my church family in a 30-day Daniel Fast in June. It was the physical, emotional and spiritual cleanse I didn’t know my body and soul was craving. Have you ever needed something so badly, but didn’t realize until it was given to you?
I popped into IG a couple times during this fast but ultimately leaned into focused writing, which was life changing. My family and I then used a couple weeks to connect on our annual road trip in July. This year we visited Lake Martin, Alabama, Destin, Florida and Chattanooga, Tennessee. It’s impossible to see such natural beauty of a peaceful lake, endless turquoise oceans and soaring smoky mountains without remembering The Creator of it all. How marvelous are His works!

For a moment, I thought about bringing you along with me. There will be times when I do, but not this time. I savored every moment imprinting it on my heart and mind to revisit without a camera obstructing my view. I have a bit of a love hate relationship with social media. It’s the vehicle by which I can reach and connect with you, my lovely community. And, for this I am grateful. However, have you noticed that since social media became prevalent, nothing seems sacred anymore? Common sense seems to have taken a seat in the back of the room.
Discernment and discretion about what to share or put on display for all to judge and consume without full context, seemingly has disappeared. I’ve fallen trap to this indiscretion too. Social media has become like an insatiable rabid animal – isolating, unpredictable and never satisfied. One must be wise to protect oneself from being infected and consumed. I catch myself time and time again, trying to find the balance of human connection and wise boundaries to protect and savor life’s most precious and sacred moments.

It’s our second week back and despite the mounting pile of dorm items accumulating in my foyer, I’ve been avoidable the inevitable. It’s our last week before we drop my son off at college. He’s ready but it doesn’t make it any less difficult. I wish I could slow time down to the moments that mean the most. Seeing him seated at my kitchen island every day has been a fixture I didn’t realize meant so much.
Despite his cringe and big muscular arms, I’ve been leaning in for a long hug every day this week. Mamas, aunties, grandmas, sisters, best friends -- you know the hug I mean? The ones that are a conversation without words. The ones that release wings for them to fly. The ones that say, remember. The ones that say never forget who you are and whose you are. The ones that say you have a home and a family. The ones that say you are loved beyond measure. With each embrace, I speak The Name of Jesus, covering him in prayer that span generations – declaring safety and salvation over His life. Proclaiming power, love and a sound mind over who God made Him before the foundations of the earth and has called him to be in this life. It’s been a sobering week.

Time doesn’t wait for us to be ready for moments like these. It meets us where we are and demands our readiness. What’s demanding your readiness today, lovely? Are you leaning in with an embrace of prayer or resisting in resentment? There are other demands on my life that I sometimes resist with resentment. I pray for you today as I sit praying for myself as I write in the stillness of the early morning.
I am still sitting in a season of waiting for my next career move, waiting for a door to open that I knock but refuse to push open – have learned never to push open. Pedigrees mean nothing when life is requiring patience. My mother taught me as a little girl, that “what God has for me, it is for me.” There isn’t a soul on earth that can take what God has in His Hands for me. As a Home Attendant Nurse, my mother often found herself in homes and places of wealth that she could only dream of for her life and five children as a single mother. She never allowed it to overcome her with desire or envy. There’s no need to be envious, angry or covetous over what someone else has, if God meant it for you, you would have it. Watching my mother move with grace and gratitude during those tender years of my life has been the example that has led my life in every season. I hope you will adopt it to. It’s my life’s mantra.
